Mittens use in NICU

MATERIAL
1/2 oz., 1 Ply Acrylic Fingering Weight Baby Yarn
Medium: Straight Needles US #2
Large: Straight Needles US #3
1 darning needle
STITCH EXPLANATION
Increase “inc. 1 st in next st” = knit the stitch as usual,
but don’t slip it off the needle. Now knit in the back of the same stitch. 
Using Straight Needles
INSTRUCTION

Cable Cast On Very Loose (or use larger size needles)
20 stitches
(Wrist)Ribs
Knit 1 stitch, Purl 1 stitch for 15 rows
(Hand) Increase 
*Knit 2, inc.1 st in next st,* repeat to the 2 last sts, Knit 2 = 26 sts
Purl 1 row
Work in stockinette (Knit 1 row, Purl 1 row) for 14 rows
Decrease
-*Knit 2 stitches together* repeat = 13 sts
-Purl
-*Knit 2 stitches together* repeat to the last stitch, Knit 1 = 7 sts
Finishing
Cut yarn leaving a 12” tail and thread tail through the remaining stitches, one at a time, and take them off the knitting needles. Turn work on wrong side. Secure tail by making a knot with the darning needle. Hands sew the mitten sides. Weave in ends.
Using Double Pointed Needles
INSTRUCTION
Cable Cast On Very Loose (or use larger size needles)
20 stitches, attach to knit in round.
(Wrist)Ribs
Knit 1 stitch, Purl 1 stitch for 15 rows
(Hand) Increase 
*Knit 2, inc.1 st in next st * repeat to the 2 last sts, Knit 2 = 26 sts
Knit for: 15 rows
Decrease
- *Knit 2 stitches together* repeat = 13 sts
- Knit
-*Knit 2 stitches together* repeat to the last stitch, Knit 1 = 7 sts
Finishing
Cut yarn leaving a 8” tail and thread tail through the remaining stitches, one at a time, and take them off the knitting needles. Pull tail tight by the inside of the work, turn work on wrong side.
Secure tail by making a knot with the darning needle. Weave in ends. 01/01/14
