Knit Pattern Hat Booties and Mittens Set 

in Pattern Stitch 

(Large Preemie or Small Newborn)

Use Acrylic baby 3 ply yarn / Size # 5 double pointed needles / 1 darning needle / 1 medium hook

Abbreviations And Stitch Explanation
K = knit
K2TOG = knit 2 together
M1 = (make 1) One increase worked by lifting horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Work this new stitch through the back loop.
P = purl
PSSO = pass slip stitch over (over knit stitch)
R = row
RS = right side
SL1K = slip 1 stitch as you knit
SL1P = slip 1 stitch as you purl
st(s) = stitch(es)
WS = wrong side
YF = put yarn in front of work
YO = yarn over (bring yarn in front of work and knit next stitch)

Pattern Stitch:
Rounds 1 and 2: Knit
Round 3: Purl 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches
Repeat Rounds 1 to 3 for Pattern Stitch

HAT
Cast on very loose 54 stitches and divide stitches evenly onto 3 needles. (18-18-18)
Join, being careful not to twist stitches.
Place marker for beginning of round (or use first stitch tail).
Work in K1, P2 rib for 1.75 inches.
Then work in “Pattern Stitch” until Pattern Stitch measures 4.5 inches
Shape crown:
Next Rnd: *K7, K2TOG, Repeat from * around – 48 sts.
Rnd 2 : *K6, K2TOG, Repeat from * around – 42 sts.
Rnd 3 : *K5, K2TOG, Repeat from * around - 36 sts.
Continue to decrease in this manner until there are 6 sts left.
Next Round: K6 sts around (separate the sts on 2 needles 3-3)
Repeat this round until cord measures 2.25 inches. Leaving 8” tail, thread tail through the 6 sts.
Insert darning needle in center of cord and pull tail.
Finishing:
Knot cord and secure the tail inside the hat. Weave in ends.
Turn up ribbed cuff
Hat should measure when finished with brim folded  width 4.5”, length 5.5”

BOOTIES
SOLE
Working with 2 straight or 2 double pointed needles, Cast on 27 sts
1st row: (WS) Knit
2nd row: (RS) K1, M1, K12, M1, K1, M1, K12, M1, K1 = 31 sts
3rd row: (WS) Knit
4th row: (RS) K1, M1, K14, M1, K1, M1, K14, M1, K1 = 35 sts
5th row: (WS) Knit
6th row: (RS) K1, M1, K16, M1, K1, M1, K16, M1, K1 = 39 sts
Divide stitches onto 3 needles. (7-25-7)
Join, being careful not to twist stitches
Work 6 rows with pattern stitch (2 patterns)

1st R: (RS) K15,K2TOG, K5, SL1K, K1, PSSO, SL1K, YF, Turn
2nd R: (WS)       K2TOG, K5, SL1K, K1, PSSO, YF, SL1P, Turn
3rd R: (RS)         K2TOG, K5, SL1K, K1, PSSO, SL1K, YF, Turn
4th R: (WS)        K2TOG, K5, SL1K, K1, PSSO,YF, SL1P, Turn
5th R: (RS)         K2TOG, K5, SL1K, K1, PSSO, SL1K, YF, Turn
6th R: (WS)        K2TOG, K5, SL1K, K1, PSSO, YF, SL1P, Turn

HOLES:
*YO, K2TOG* repeat *,* to the last sts. YO,K1
Next row knit around to the last 2 sts, K2TOG
Next row Purl 1, Knit 2
Continue to knit in pattern stitch for 15 rows (5 patterns)
Ribs; K1, P2 for 5 rows
Cast off very loose. Weave in end. On wrong side sew the sole.
CHAIN
With hook, make a 12” chain. Thread chain through holes and tie a bow.
Turn cuff.

MITTENS
Cast on 21 sts divide stitches onto 3 needles (6-9-6).
Join, being careful not to twist stitches.
K1, P2 for 2”
Next row (increase 6 sts)* K3 M1, K4 M1* around = 27 sts (divide sts 9-9-9)
Next row Knit
Next row Purl 1, Knit 2 around
Continue to knit in pattern stitch for 15 rows (5 patterns)
Decrease: K1, K2TOG around

K2TOG around

Finishing: Cut yarn (keeping 8” tail), Draw tail onto stitches.
